Requirements for posted volunteers
Authorisation
You must be a registered dentist in Denmark or an equivalent Nordic country. If you are a student, you must attach proof of active enrolment when applying.
Experience
A minimum of two years’ clinical experience following completion of your degree. As a dental student, you must have completed the 8th semester, and as a dental hygienist student, the 4th semester.
Criminal record & certificate of good standing
You must be able to provide a clean criminal record and a certificate of good standing to be deployed.
Valid passport
You must have a valid passport with at least 6 months’ validity remaining.
Vaccinations
You must follow the vaccination requirements and recommendations that apply to your destination. We’ll guide you through the process.
Field conditions
You must be willing to work in basic clinical settings with limited resources.
Health
You must be physically and mentally capable of completing a deployment.
Openness
Openness towards other cultures and collaboration with local staff.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can dental hygienists and dental assistants also be posted abroad?
Yes. We regularly send out teams comprising a range of dental specialisms. Please contact us to find out about current opportunities.
What if I don’t speak the local language?
We work with local interpreters who help with communication between volunteers, patients and partners during the mission. However, we encourage all volunteers to learn a few simple words and phrases in the local language, such as ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’. It’s a small gesture that often helps to build trust and foster good relationships.
How long does a programme last?
Typically 1–2 weeks. In special cases, shorter or longer stays can be arranged.
Is there an age limit?
No. The most important thing is that you are physically and mentally capable of completing a mission.
Is my employer entitled to compensation?
Dental Health Without Borders does not offer compensation to employers, but many clinics grant leave for voluntary work.
What about security?
Safety is a top priority in all our assignments. We only send volunteers to areas we consider safe, and all those sent on assignments are covered by travel and liability insurance.
What is a certificate of good standing (CGS)?
A Certificate of Good Standing is a document issued by a healthcare professional national licensing authority, confirming that they hold a valid and unrestricted professional license in their home country. It is essentially proof that there are no restrictions or concerns regarding their right to practice. The process for obtaining one will vary depending on the country, so we would recommend that each participant contacts their relevant national licensing authority to find out how to apply.
